Comparative clinical effectiveness research (CER) compares the effectiveness of two or more interventions or approaches to health care by examining their risks and benefits. CER findings assist clinicians, patients and other stakeholders in making informed decisions to improve health care. Comparing two or more interventions distinguishes CER from other types of clinical research. CER can both validate a particular intervention and identify which treatments best meet a specific population’s needs.
The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) primarily funds CER studies. These studies compare the benefits and harms of two or more treatments, clinical strategies or other approaches to health care. The type of CER that PCORI supports focuses on outcomes that patients and other health care stakeholders indicate are important.
